Journal call for expressions of interest extended

Submit expressions of interest by 26 October 2020

A special edition of the International Journal of Practice-based Learning in Health and Social Care has extended its call for expressions of interest.

The new edition, ‘Rising to the challenge: policy, practice and partnership in practice-based learning during the COVID-19 pandemic’, invites submissions until 26 October 2020.

We are inviting submissions for this special edition of the journal to explore innovations and experiences in practice-based learning during the pandemic.

All submissions should focus on practice-oriented educational activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Expressions of interest should be no more than 300 words and include:

  • Overview of the article including impact on practice
  • Link to the COVID-19 pandemic
  • The theme the work aligns to (see below)
  • Type of article (see below)
  • Your professional group

It is anticipated that the special issue will include research-based, evaluation and reflective submissions that capture creativity and practice development.

Health and social care have been particularly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The impact will continue to change ways of working in health and care settings.

The practice learning environment has seen rapid and widespread adaptation and change, with many anecdotal examples of innovative and ground-breaking practice evident.

The main themes

  • Policy perspectives on practice-based learning during the pandemic, including work between health and care organisations, government and higher education
  • Novel and innovative approaches to practice-based learning that could help to inform future practice
  • Student and educator perspectives of practice-based learning during COVID-19, including collaborative, partnership and alternative ways of working

The special issue will seek to reflect the spectrum of experiences and activities across disciplines and diverse geographical and health and care settings.

Types of articles

Research, evaluative or conceptual articles will be up to a maximum of 4,000 words and should present original research, evaluation or theoretical work.

A common structure for these is introduction, background, research design, findings / results, discussion and conclusion, but this is flexible depending on the article.

Reflective or discussion pieces should be no longer than 1,500 words and give a reflective or discursive narrative that explores one of the themes listed above.

Masterclasses or innovative practice case studies may be up to 4,000 words and should include introduction, background literature, methodology/principles, discussion, conclusion and messages.

Masterclasses and case studies will present expert detailed guidance related to one of the themes, demonstrating depth of understanding, rigour and originality
